ski lifts in ItalyFrom 2020 to 2025, the number of decommissioned ski lifts in Italy doubled: 265 facilities are no longer operational, up from 132 five years earlier. The regions most affected are Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto, but the phenomenon also involves Central Italy.

This figure points to a structural shift. Reduced snowfall, rising operating costs—particularly energy—and increasing competition among destinations are putting pressure on the economic sustainability of entire ski areas. The impacts go beyond skiing, affecting the overall balance of mountain territories, with consequences for employment, services and the value of local real estate assets.

The decommissioning of ski infrastructure is also reflected in real estate dynamics and liquidation procedures, with knock-on effects on hospitality facilities, land and related infrastructure. In many areas, the question is no longer whether to act, but how to rethink the development model, steering it toward more diversified and sustainable forms of tourism.

In this context, the transition requires integrated solutions: data analysis, asset valuation and management, energy efficiency measures, consumption optimization and the responsible use of resources. RINA Prime supports public and private stakeholders along these transformation paths, through a cross-disciplinary approach that combines technical, digital and real estate expertise.

The analysis was prepared by the RINA Prime Research Center based on data from Legambiente and the RINA Prime auction database.
